In the heart of downtown Austin there are over 10 miles of trails that run along both sides of Lady Bird Lake. The trails offer great views of the lake and the Austin skyline. The trails are made of crushed granite. They are fairly flat and wide making them great for riding bikes, walking or running. The crushed granite also makes the trail smooth enough to bring along a stroller. You will find a few restrooms and water fountains along the trails as well as several sitting areas with benches to rest and enjoy the scenery. You can't swim in the lake but you can rent a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore and get some excercise.

Lady Bird Lake, formerly known as Town Lake, is an Austin gem. It's for great for walking, running or riding bikes. You have a great view of the lake and the skyline. It's so peaceful, you'd never know you were in the heart of the city. The trails are mostly dirt and wide enough that even on weekends, which can get crowded, it's still easy to navigate the trails with a stroller or a dog, or both. If you bring your four-legged companion they have an off-leash dog area where you can see dogs flying into the water after balls and sticks. The trails are clearly marked and there are multiple loops from under 3 miles to over 10. There are water fountains, benches and bathrooms along the trail just in case. There is a spot along the trail where the ducks and turtles hang out on the lake. We usually bring some bread and my kids love to stop and feed the ducks. It's a popular spot so parking can be tricky. Parking at Auditorium Shores usually fills up so you may have drive around or wait a bit. We usually have the best luck parking along the street or at the parking lot in front of Austin High School. Lady Bird Lake is one of my favorite places in Austin and a must-see for Austin residents and visitors alike....more
