We had a great time getting our tree this year at Elgin Christmas Tree Farm. We arrived the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving and the farm was bustling. After walking around to check things out a bit, we got in line to wait for the hayride which would take us out the field to cut our tree. We only waited for about 5 minutes before the tractor came. This was our first time so the young girl at the front of the line explained the very easy process of grabbing a saw as you exit the tractor, picking your tree and tagging it.

Once we got out to the field there were lots of shapes and sizes to choose from. There were a lot of stickers so I would definitely recommend long pants and thick-soled shoes. We wore both but the kids still ended up with a few stickers on them. The farm is very dog friendly and there were lots of dogs in the fields. If you do bring your dog, you may want to put booties on them so that they don't get stickers in their paws.

Once we selected our tree, we cut it down and pulled it up to the pick-up area. When the tractor pulled up, the driver hopped out and loaded our tree for us. Back at the main entrance they shook it out and netted it for us. We forgot a rope to tie the tree to the top of our car but they had a bucket with twine for just that. They have everything you need! All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The trees are really reasonably priced too. The choose-n-cut prices go by size and start at $27. They also had a bunch of pre-cut trees available for purchase as well as wreaths and garlands. I stopped into the cottage shop, where they sell ornaments and other Christmas stuff. I thought they had a great selection and very affordable prices. We also bought a few trinkets at the barn shop which sells small toys for children from $1-5 and some snacks and drinks.

Other activities the we enjoyed on the farm were visiting with the animals, the 1 mile crazy maze and playing on the playground. The playground is small, really just a swing set and a small toddler slide but my kids, 2 and 4, had fun. We were there on a Saturday so they had Elgin sausage wraps, chips and other snacks but they only offer that on weekends. There was also a nice covered pavilion with picnic tables. We had a blast and we'll definitely be making it a family tradition.
